“Smithalo” the 60-ton rock, concrete & steel monument, measuring 23 ft. long and 15-1/4 ft. high, which pays tribute to the American bison or buffalo, was constructed by brothers, Ray O. and Chester Smith in 1977 & 1978. Dedicated July 2, 1978, attended by 3,000 guests, it is located 7 mi. southwest of Longford in eastern Ottawa County, Kansas.
This postcard was born after the BAD POSTCARDS time period I have set for this Tumblr (1950 - 1975). I acquired it this weekend and was sure it was at least 10 years older. It’s such a great card. I couldn’t resist.

Texas Longhorn Cattle, once counted in the millions, were almost extinct in 1920. By careful selection and breeding, the Fort Niobrara National wildlife Refuge has built up one of the finest herds to be found anywhere. It is located on State Highway 12, five miles northeast of Valentine, Nebraska.

BIG MEDICINE WHITE BUFFALO
Russell Gallery, Helena, Montana
Big Medicine roamed the hillsides for over 26 years on the National Bison Range at Moisie, Montana and is now enshrined in the Charles M. Russell Gallery at Helena, where this picture was taken. Altho Big Medicine, a very rare white buffalo oddity, was not a true albino, he sired a real albino in 1937 which lived for 12 years. Big Medicine was born in 1933.

These huge figures of steel and concrete built on the shore of Lake Bemidji are emblematical of the days of the early lumberjack who originated lumbercamp whoppers of Paul & Babe that have been handed down for generations. These stories, never heard outside the haunts of the lumberjack until recent years, are declared by some literary authorities to be ‘the only true American myth’.
