SMITHALO
Alright, class…
A JACKALOPE is a cross between what two animals? Jack Rabbit and Antelope.
A SMITHALO is a cross between what two animals? Read on.
“Smithalo” the 60-ton rock, concrete & steel monument, measuring 23 ft. long and 15-1/4 ft. high, which pays tribute to the American bison or buffalo, was constructed by brothers, Ray O. and Chester Smith in 1977 & 1978. Dedicated July 2, 1978, attended by 3,000 guests, it is located 7 mi. southwest of Longford in eastern Ottawa County, Kansas.
This postcard was born after the BAD POSTCARDS time period I have set for this Tumblr (1950 - 1975). I acquired it this weekend and was sure it was at least 10 years older. It’s such a great card. I couldn’t resist.

IT’S PAUL BUNYAN DAY!
PAUL BUNYAN AND BABE, HIS BLUE OX
These huge figures of steel and concrete built on the shore of Lake Bemidji are emblematical of the days of the early lumberjack who originated lumbercamp whoppers of Paul & Babe that have been handed down for generations. These stories, never heard outside the haunts of the lumberjack until recent years, are declared by some literary authorities to be ‘the only true American myth’.

THE SANTA CLAUS STATUE
“…located in Santa Claus Land, Indiana, and dedicated to Santa Claus, himself, is one of the most often photographed statues in the country.”
More photographed than the Statue of Liberty? Actually, his right arm is raised, just like Miss Liberty. Stick a torch in it, a tabula ansata under his left arm, and you’ve got the Liberty Claus!

“BIG TEX
The world’s tallest cowboy, 60 feet high, at the entrance to the State Fair Grounds, the world’s largest State Fair, Dallas, Texas.”
To my brain, a STATE fair takes place in a STATE in the United STATES, so calling it the WORLD’S largest is inflating the brag. Everything else in Texas, however, is the World’s Largest.
