HAPPY OBSERVED BIRTHDAY, GEORGE
Tell me that Martha doesn’t look like a guy in drag.

GEORGE and MARTHA WASHINGTON, are among the fifty life size wax figures in the Hall of Famous Americans in Santa Claus Land, Indiana. Lewis Sorensen who created these likenesses is the foremost wax artist in the country.

You wouldn’t know that from this postcard.

Abraham Lincoln - 1861On February 22, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln passed through Lancaster on his journey from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration, and delivered a speech form a balcony of the Caldwell House, later known as the Brunswick Hotel. He passed through Lancaster a second time…on April 21, 1865…This time the martyred President’s body lay in a black-draped funeral train as it slowly returned him to his beloved Illinois.

Guess that’s Mary Todd next to him? Looks like his mum. Poor gal isn’t even identified on the postcard.

LOUIS PASTEURPotters Wax MuseumSt. Augustine, Florida
This is one of my favorite wax museum postcards. I love the arthritic hands. The poor guy can’t bend his fingers enough to get a good grip on the syringe. The taxidermied chinchilla is a nice touch. But Louis isn’t paying attention to what he’s doing. The chilla is getting spiked while Louis is gazing off into space. Not professional. The artist’s laboratory backdrop is kinda cool.

HUCK FINN SEDUCES MARK TWAIN
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARK TWAIN!
The name of this wax museum isn’t printed on the verso, but the postcard was printed in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, so I have to assume it’s the American Historical Wax Museum.

SAMUEL LANGHORNE CLEMENS “MARK TWAIN” 1835 - 1910:
American novelist worked as a printer, Mississippi river boat pistol and newspaper reporter. His novels “Innocents Aboard,” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “Tom Sawyer,” and many more brought him fame as America’s foremost humorist. He is shown with Huck Finn, one of his famous literary figures.

Note their typo: Innocents ABOARD instead of ABROAD.

JESUS IN THE SMOKIES
There have been plenty of pathetic wax renderings of Jesus, but this one is a winner. What’s up with the girl at the left? She’s been assimilated?

CHRISTUS GARDENSGatlinburg, Tennessee
A Major Visitor Attraction of the Smokies
A favorite alike of young and old is the life-like scene in which Christ is welcoming the little ones to come to his side. This view is a close-up of Christ and two of the children from the larger overall scene. This is but one of the spacious three-dimensional dioramas in which the life of Christ is depicted from beginning to end.

GOLDWATER ACCEPTS
47 years ago today, Barry Goldwater accepted the Republican presidential nomination. In his acceptance speech he said, ”I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
Goldwater won 6 states—Arizona (his home state), Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina—for a total of 52 electoral votes.

CUSTER’S LAST STAND (Anniversary of)
Custer’s eyes completely kill any solemnity that the museum may have tried to create. I’d be laughing like crazy.
